The weather on Saturday for the big race was perfect. The teams starting showing up around 3:00 Saturday afternoon.

Track owner Hugh Smibert had been preparing the track all week and it showed. The track was in perfect condition - possibly the best it has been all year.

Hotlaps started around 4:00 with time trials beginning just after 5:00.

You could tell everyone was anxious, as there were several crashes during hotlaps!

Again this year, the times in the time trials were very close. 1st place had a time of 11:02 and 48th place was 13:646.

The Micros ran the 1st feature, with #10, Bob Marr the eventual winner.

The Outlaw feature was decided on the LAST LAP, with #44, Barry Dunn passing #301, Ron Veroughstrate in corners 1 & 2.

Thanks to everyone for a great racing season!!!!

Hope to see everyone at the banquet on Nov 14, 2004!

MICRO B MAIN

The B Main ran very quickly with few cautions and like a lot of other nights, everyone trying to make sure they are in the top 10.

# 17 Craig Housden took the lead early and held on to it for most of the race and finally crossing over the finish line in first place.

# 79 Chad Baker and # 76 Sean Durand battled for 2nd place with Chad # 79 taking 2nd and Sean # 76 having to be happy with 3rd place.

Numbers 37 and 67 had to leave the race due to mechanical problems, but will definitely both be ready for the next race.

OUTLAW B MAIN

The Outlaw B Main was won by # 20 Mark Watson with # 45 Curtis Gartly breathing down his neck the whole race. This made for a very exciting race not knowing if Mark's luck would hold for the whole race or not. It did.

The first caution came when # 99 Mike Smuck spun out. The second caution was when # 62 driven once again by Dan Laemers had to leave due to mechanical problems and was unable to rejoin the race. Caution was called again when # 99 Mike lost a front wheel and # 2 Hugh Smibert (our wonderful host and track provider) unfortunately hit the tires to avoid an accident with Mike. The final caution was called due to debris (believed to be a part of Hugh's car found on the track) Sorry about that Hugh, hope it was not damaged and was returned to you safely.

This race was fast with a lot of cautions called due to minor problems, the lead changed many times and the passing was constant in the main pack.

Just before half way a Red Flag was called as several cars tried to make it a 3 wide track and rearrange the tires just in front of the starters stand once again. Unfortunately this is just not possible and everyone loses. A few cars were removed from the track not to return again that night. Quite a bit of damage was incurred. #13, Kurt Rotterman crossed the line first to pick up his 3rd feature win for 2003.

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to how the final line up for the Outlaw A Main was decided tonight, so I am taking this time to try and explain what happened to shed light on the situation for everyone.

A new way of deciding the top 12 starting positions for the outlaw A Main was attempted tonight.
The top 4 finishers in each heat race qualified for the A Main. Then the remainder of the field was based on the finish from the B Main.

Once the field was established, the dice was rolled to determine the number of cars to be inverted (usually a max of 8 cars could be inverted but tonight up to 12 cars could be inverted) more cars were included in the inversion than normal, to try to handicap the faster cars making for a more interesting race.

I hope this clarifies the Outlaw A Main lineup for everyone.

MICRO B MAIN

The B Main had lots of action tonight.  #97 Kenny Charboneau and #27 Nathan Housden, battled hard for 1st place. In the rest of the pack, there was constant passing and re-passing as everyone fought to make it to the top 10.

The B Main was finally won by # 27 Nathan Housden.

OUTLAW B MAIN

The Outlaw B Main had some interesting moves tonight as #8 Ken Lewis took an early lead in the race but was chased down by #301 Ron Veroughstrate who eventually got the lead and kept it right to the end.

#8 Ken Lewis,  and #36 Casey Cox,  put up a fierce battle for 2nd place until #36 had mechanical problems and had to retire from the race. Back in the car #62, which is owned by Steve Burlotte, was being driven by Dan Laemers once again tonight. Dan finished in 3rd place.

#17 Craig Housden took an early lead right from the start and eventually took the checkered flag. He was closely followed by #10 Bob Marr, through-out the race. #10, Bob Marr, was waiting for his chance to slip by Craig. Unfortunately, Bob ran out of time and had to settle for 2nd place. Bob was patient, but never found the right moment to take over the lead from #17.

Part way through the race, #55 Jordan Hanna had a wild crash as he hit the tires near the flag stand while trying to pass on the outside on the front straight away. Several cars were collected in the crash and a red flag was thrown. His car was towed from the track, as it sustained quite a bit of damage, fortunately he was unhurt.

Mean while the rest of the field was constantly changing places, trying to move up, making it a very interesting finish.

# 20 Mark Watson took the lead almost from the green flag and was able to hang on to win as he battled against #45 Curtis Gartly, who was doing his best to get past Mark Watson.

Halfway through the race, #24 Darin Hanna and #36 Casey Cox were caught up in corner # 3 and both ended up doing several flips, finally coming to rest upside down. Again a red flag was called. Neither driver was seriously injured, but the same could not be said for their cars.
#20, Mark Watson held on for the win.

Congratulations to all competitors for a great night of racing!

OUTLAW B MAIN.

The Outlaw B Main was very fast and exciting to watch tonight. There was a lot of passing both in the front of the pack and at the back giving us a lot of neck to neck competitiveness in the back and bumper-to-bumper racing in the top 5. They were racing two wide for quite a few laps in the front half of the pack. The Outlaw B main was won by # 8 Ken Lewis after a tough race holding off #91 Kyle Watters, #02 Hugh Smibert and # 36 Casey Cox who were fiercely breathing down his neck for the whole race.

MICRO B MAIN

The Micro B Main was equally exciting to watch tonight, as there was a lot of passing in the back half of the pack while the top runners remained the same. Six of the top 10 in points were in the B Main.

# 13 Kurt Rotterman, who started the race on inside pole caught the back markers around the ½ mark of the race, and continued on to win the B Main. # 69 Andy Wells and # 5A D. Rabkin had a bit of a rough night with spinouts but appeared to be undamaged.

OUTLAW "A" MAIN

The DR INSELL Transport Inc. "A" main was fast paced as # 45 Curtis Gartly moved from 3rd position to take the lead once again early in the race.

Substitute driver Dan Lamers, put on an exciting race of his own as he and # 301, Ron Veroughstrate, ran cleanly but hard together, until # 301 secured the 2nd position and # 3 took over the 3rd position.

The  # 3 car is owned and usually driven by Steve Wells, I am sure Steve will be pleased to hear that his car did so well and all without any damage.

# 11, Norm Brunette, and # 62, Steve Burlotte, ran wheel to wheel for several laps with out mishap and was exciting to watch. # 20, Mark Watson, had a bit of bad luck when he spun out and lost a rear wheel again.

MICRO "A"  MAIN

The DR INSELL Transport Inc.  Micro "A" Main was also fast paced and great to watch as all the other races were tonight. # 90, Mark Lamont, started out on inside pole, but was soon forced to give it over to rookie  # 55,  Jordan Hanna. # 76, Sean Durand, who started in the 3rd position moved up quickly to 2nd followed by # 203 Stan Adams in 3rd.  # 76, Sean soon passed # 55 and had # 203 breathing down his neck as he passed # 55 as well.

# 76 lead the race for quite a while, trying to break away from # 203. #203 Stan eventually took over the lead from # 76 and # 55 took the 3rd position as the rest of the pack fought for positioning of their own. The race was moving quickly with a few minor cautions until an upset involving # 76 sent Sean to the back and giving # 203 Stan Adams a clear shot at the lead.

Mean while # 32 Dan Lamers was once again driving with a purpose in his own car, as he moved from the 15th position up through the pack to finish the race in 3rd.

Congratulations to all the competitors and officials for another great night of racing.

Special thanks to the track owner, Hugh Smibert for all his hard work getting the track ready for racing every Friday night.

MICRO - B Feature
22 cars started the B Feature for the Micros

On the second lap, #30 Greg Smulders lost a tire high over the heads of the crowd when his left front spindle snapped. Fortunately there were no injuries and racing continued. This year, a high wire fence surrounding the track in front of the grand stands had been installed as a safety feature.

#48 Chris Barendregt took an early lead and stayed there through out the race. Minor spinouts caused multiple cautions and the race was called after 10 laps with
#48 Chris Barendregt picking up the "B" Feature win..

OUTLAW - B Feature
11 cars started the B Feature for the Outlaws.

Rookie #38 Rob King quickly began to lap some of the back markers but was eventually over taken by #69 Matt Wells, who slipped by the #38 and took over the lead to win the B Feature.

N.C.K. Cycle Salvage - Micro "A" Main

#67, Bill Durand, started outside poll and managed to get the lead right from the green flag in the "A" Main.  #67 managed to hold on to the lead for the 45 laps. Half way through this race there was a major crash that took out several cars, most of which were quickly able to rejoin the race. Several other cautions were called due to minor spinouts.

There was a great deal of passing in the pack. Second, third and fourth positions (#21 Ron Prince,  #97 Kenny Charboneau and #203 Stan Adams)  changed positions frequently throughout the race. This was the first "A" Feature win ever for the #67 car.

N.C.K. Cycle Salvage - Outlaw "A" Main

# 45 Curtis Gartly came up from 7th position to take the lead early in the race and held on to the lead to the end. He had an amazing ½ track lead on the rest of the pack. There were many excellent passes made during this race and very few cautions were called.

On one of the restarts, the Officials charged #20, Mark Watson, with passing before the cone - consequently, #20 had to start at the back of the pack on the next restart. #20, Mark Watson, still managed to finish 4th.

Congratulations to all racers for a great night of racing!

Bill Davis Memorial - 75 lap feature for the Outlaws and Micros.

From all accounts it rained everywhere in the London / St. Thomas area EXCEPT Wonderland Speedway. Hugh Smibert had the track perfectly prepared for the Bill Davis Memorial, 75 Lap A Feature..

It was decided that the Micros would run their feature first and the Outlaws would run the second feature.

MICROS

The Micros ran 3 heats with 10 cars in the 1st 2 heats, and 9 cars in the last. Top 6 from each heat would qualify for the feature.

For the unlucky few that didn't qualify in their heat race, they had to run a 15 lap B feature - with the top 6 moving onto the A feature.

At the start of the Micro feature, the Micros did several parade laps 4 wide, after the parade laps, they lined up 2 abreast and started the feature. #32 (Dan Laemers) had the early lead until he was eventually passed by #27 (Nathen Housden). Racing in the pack was hard and very close with only a few cautions. #27 held on and won the Bill Davis Memorial 75 lap A feature!

OUTLAWS

The Outlaws ran 2 heat races and then their 75 lap A main. Again, at the start of the A main they Outlaws did several parade laps 4 wide, always a fan favorite.

#20 (Mark Watson) took the early lead with #45 (Curtis Gartly) running in 2nd place. #20 would gain a little each lap and it looked like he would lead from start to finish.

However, after a long green flag run, #20 and #45 had to deal with lapped traffic. #45 was gaining on #20 until the 1st caution flew. After the restart #20 again began to pull slightly away from #45 - until lapped traffic became a factor. This time, a caution did not fly and eventually #45 caught up to # 20. #45 managed to pass #20 using the lapped cars to his advantage.

Then without warning #20 had a mechanical failure and hit the tire wall in corner 1 with a tremendous impact. The tires then 'threw' him back into oncoming traffic, with #02 (Hugh Smibert) and #36 (Casy Cox) unable to avoid the #20.

Although #20 (Mark Watson) was shaken up, he was not seriously hurt and was able to walk off the track under his own power.

After the race restarted, #45 (Curtis Gartly) held on to the lead and won the Bill Davis Memorial 75 lap feature.

Congratulations to #27 (Nathon Housden) and #45 Curtis Gartley for their feature win!

Micro Points (June 27, 2003)

June 27, 2003

Another great night of racing!

Mark Watson was doing double duty, running his own #20 Outlaw and also running the #203 in the Micros.

The Micro feature was probably the best so far this year. Long green flag runs that let the racers race. Mid way through the race there was a nasty incident on the back stretch that involved several cars, including the #203 (Mark Watson) and #40 (Shawn Preston), both were done for the night.

Several cars were on the move towards the front including the previous feature winner #13 (Kurt Roterman) and #30 (Greg Smulders) but unfortunately #30 had mechanical trouble and had to drop out  and #13 got sideways and had to go to the back.

#21 (Ron Prince) did a great job of holding back the #97 (Kenny Charboneau) and the #32 (Dan Laemers) to be rewarded with his first feature win of the year.

The Outlaw feature was the last up for the night. Again, the racing was fast and hard, with long green flag runs as well.

The last few laps of the feature were exciting to watch - #02 (Hugh Smibert) was out front with #20 (Mark Watson) and #36 (Casey Cox) breathing down his neck. #20 would try the high side then the low side to get around the #02 with #36 behind the #20 - trying his own moves as well.

#02 managed to hold off the #20 and #36 and won his first feature race of the 2003 season.

Congratulations to Ron Prince and Hugh Smibert!

"A" Feature -  Top 10

Outlaw Points (June 27, 2003)

June 20, 2003

Wow! Record car count, 31 Micros and 19 Outlaws!

The Outlaw ran their feature first with 17 cars taking the green flag. Mark Watson, #20, won his 3rd feature of the year, while Curtis Gartley, #45,  ran a close second.

Midway through the race, Hugh Smibert, #02, flipped in corner 3, fortunately Hugh walked away unhurt.

At the end of the feature, only 7 or 8 cars were still running,  several  teams will be working late nights this week to get their cars back in racing order!

With 31 cars in the Micro field, it was important to qualify for the A Main, consequently, racing was intense all night.

Compared to previous weeks, the Micro feature went off a little smoother this week, everyone must be getting back into the racing grove. Racing at the front was close throughout the feature, but Kurt Roterman, #13, prevailed and picked up his second feature win of the year. Ron Prince, #21, ran a close second with Dan Laemers, #32, finishing 3rd.

June 13, 2003

Unfortunately, with the wet weather we had all week, the track was too wet to allow racing.

The long range weather forecast is calling for a beautiful day next Friday (June 20th). Lets hope they are right!

June 6, 2003

Again, mother nature cooperated and we had a great night of racing! Several new cars were on hand as well as a ton of spectators!

However, there must have been a full moon. There were quite a few wrecks. One in particular might go down in the record books as the flip with the most air!  #85 in the Micros hit the backstretch wall and almost went into the field on the other side! Fortunately, TJ was not injured - however the same could not be said for his car.

The track was in almost perfect condition for the feature races.

The Micros ran their feature first. For the second week in a row, the Micros seemed to have a difficult time running consecutive green flag laps. One crash in turns 1 & 2 must have had over 10 cars in it! It was not uncommon to see 2 and 3 wide racing in the pack.

Eventually #13, Kurt Roterman came home the winner.

The Outlaws put on an impressive feature, with only one caution! Mark Watson (#20) and Hugh Smibert (#02) put on a Drivers clinic and finished one, two, respectively.

Congratulations to Kurt Roterman and Mark Watson for their feature wins.

May 30, 2003

First race of the year!

Even though everyone had many months to get their race cars ready, it seemed that there was many last minute preparations.

Mother nature cooperated and the turnout was great, with new drivers in both classes. If a driver had not previously raced at Wonderland Speedway, they were classified as a 'ROOKIE' and had to start at the back of their races.

The Outlaws ran their feature 1st, and Mark Watson came home first. The race ran fairly smoothly - no first night jitters.

The Micros on the other  hand seemed to be a little more umm... impatient. After several attempts at trying to get the race started, the flagman finally decided to start the race single file.

Even then it seemed that every few laps there was a caution - as DW in nascar says, cautions breed cautions. Finally the race was cut short (curfew) and Greg Smulders, #30,  was the winner.

Congratulations to Mark Watson and Greg Smulders for their first wins of the year!
