Wonderland Speedway September 17, 2005 - Driver's meeting - Hugh explained that the top 14 from the time trials would go straight to the A Mains and the rest would get their race positions from heat races. Hugh thanked everyone for being there this summer and asked that the drivers thank the sponsors and try to patronize them whenever they could.

The afternoon commenced with time trials. The #91 Kyle Watters had the fastest time trial time of 11:262 in the Outlaws and #25 Brook Chinnery with the fastest time of 11:638 in the Micros. The 100 Lap race began with an introduction of all the drivers to the spectators and a meet and greet of the drivers to the sponsors who were there Saturday afternoon giving the drivers a quick minute to say thanks to them.

The MICRO A MAIN was the first 100 lap race with #25 Brook Chinnery on pole and #13 Ian Hunter on outside pole. There were 21 cars starting the race. The drivers then strapped in and got ready to do their 4 wide salute to the fans. The racing then got underway at about 8:30 pm.

#13 Ian got the jump on #25 Brook taking an early lead putting distance between him and the #25 Brook who was busy putting distance between him and the rest of the field. This race was quickly shaping up to be a super fast race. After SEVERAL green laps the #13 Ian came off the track with engine problems leaving #25 Brook in first place, followed by #55 Jordan Hanna who now sat in 2nd place.

About 10 minutes into the race there still had not been ANY cautions. #25 Brook lapped cars at a tremendously fast rate as he worked his way through the field. Cars were dropping out for various problems without causing any cautions and at one point there were only about 14 cars still on the field. A caution finally came out as #19 Trevor Helle lost a wheel and left the track. (The officials frowned on 3 wheelers on the track). Number #25 Brook was being timed at 12:34 second laps.

A neck guard appeared on the track between corners 1 and 2 and sat there for many laps before it was noticed. Finally a caution was called for safety reasons so it could be returned to the driver who obviously didn't know it was missing as there were several laps made under caution before the culprit was found, #67 Bill Durand. Sheepishly he stopped to pick up the now pretty dirty neck guard and quickly put it back on. Because this was a safety issue, he was able to resume his position on the track without a penalty.

Shortly after this caution another one occurred in corner 4 as #203 Nathan Lloyd lost his two front wheels and #15 Michael Hanna rolled his car also catching the #89 Sadie Bennett. This all happened very quickly and unfortunately I was too far away to see the sequence of things. #15 Michael left the track but made it back on.

Brook #25 continued to hold the lead with a strong car keeping several lapped cars between him and 2nd place car of #55 Jordan.

The next caution came out as #16 Rick Bigg lost a wheel in corner 4, #89 Sadie left the track but made it back on before the race resumed. Apparently she was having brake problems. With everyone leaving and coming back (or not) Poor Wayne Stainton, our score keeper, must have been pulling his hair out trying to keep up to all the action of this 100 lapper. Racing continued with #40 Shawn Preston leaving with out causing a caution, #13 Ian left, no caution which left 16 cars on the track from the original 21.

Just at the half way point through the race, a caution came out as the #15 Michael got caught in the mud at the edge of the track on the inside and came to an abrupt halt. Now the top five cars on the lead lap were #25 Brook 1st, #79 Chad Baker 2nd, #76 Sean Durand 3rd , #17 Craig Housden 4th, #72 Bob Kelly 5thth.

The next caution came out as #11 Jason Martin hit the tires causing #85 T J Esler to spin into the infield on the front stretch #19 Trevor Helle left again at this point but got his place back in line.

There were 59 laps to go with #25 Brook still in 1st, #79 Chad Baker 2nd, #76 Sean Durand 3rd , #17 Craig Housden 4th, #72 Bob Kelly 5thth EVERYONE was driving hard and fast but relatively cleanly.

At lap #68, a caution came out for the #55 Jordan as he spun in corner 4 but he got his spot back and I believe #29 Shane Butler went to the back on that one. Suddenly #76 Sean Durand's car died and he left the track without causing a caution. Apparently the #76 Sean's clutch broke, effectively ending his racing for the night. He had come all the way back from Montreal where he is attending school for the weekend racing. At least he had a great race while his clutch was working.

The next caution was a red flag as #89 Sadie spun to miss #11 Jason who had hit #58 Chris Kolpin bringing both of them to a full stop in corner 4. Unfortunately for #89 Sadie, her brakes chose this moment to give out and she went into the tires in front of the fans between corners 3 and 4 at full speed, rolling her car and hitting the tires with quite an impact. #67 Bill Durand was also caught up in this as he spun and hitting the tires as he tried to miss #89 Sadie. #11 Jason left the track as well as, #58 Chris whose axle was destroyed. This left 13 cars on the track.

#25 Brook still held the lead with #79 Chad 2nd, #55 Jordan 3rd, #17 Craig 4th, and #72 Bob 5th. The other 9 cars were one or two laps down. #11 Jason had made it back on to the track but ran so hard after a few laps he ran himself right up into the infield where he stayed for the rest of the race.

Racing became even more intense as in corner 2, #79 Chad made a play for 1st place and rode side by side with the #25 Brook with #55 Jordan right behind them in 3rd place. Surprisingly enough, both #79 Chad and #25 Brook got blown away when #55 Jordan made it past them on the high side as they were struggling for 1st place. Then the #25 Brook began slowing down and was being passed by all the previously lapped cars, eventually leaving the track himself with a stripped gear.

The final caution of this race, came out in corner 4 shortly afterwards when #55 Jordan spun causing #6 Andrew Gartly to hit #27 Nathan Housden hard, also ensnaring the #16 Rick and #72 Bob in this pile up. #55 Jordan who had been running in 1st place then left the track.

With 3 laps to go, #79 Chad still held the lead, with #72 Bob in 2nd and #17 Craig 3rd. The race came to an end with only about 9 cars left on the track and #79 Chad Baker taking the checkered flag. Congratulations Chad. Great race!

The OUTLAW A MAIN also had a driver's introduction to the fans and to the sponsors before they got in to offer their own 4 wide salute to the fans. #91 Kyle Watters had inside pole with #6 Tyler Wilson on outside pole. Two laps into the race, a caution came out for the #02 Hugh Smibert who appeared to have suffered mechanical problems and was pushed off the track. #77 Josh Ackworth and #90 Mark Lamont had spun during this caution and both had to be pushed off the track. #49 Brad Duff also chose this time to leave the track.

This left 23 cars from the original 27 which started the race. On the restart #6 Tyler held the lead with #45 Curtis Gartly in 2nd. Cars were very quickly lapped #37 Shawn Paul's car which was being driven by Dean Parker tonight left the track with engine problems.

The remaining cars ran single file except for the #62 Steve Burlotte and #301 Ron Veroughstrate who ran side by side for a few laps. Cars were being lapped one right after the other as the #6 Tyler and #45 Curtis, #91 Kyle Watters and #32 Dan Laemers made their way around the track. Just as #45 Curtis took over the lead, #32 Dan left the track with mechanical problems. The top three were now #45 Curtis, #91 Kyle 2nd and #6 Tyler 3rd.

#91 Kyle bumped #4 Steve Wells quite hard as he was passing #4 Steve, pushing him down to the edge of the track between corners 1 and 2, but #4 Steve was able to hang on to the car and no caution was called.

Halfway through the race #45 Curtis and #91 Kyle ran side by side with #91 Kyle coming out ahead as he took over the lead. Meanwhile back in the field #8 Ken Lewis and #20 Mark Watson ran side by side. Back up in the front of the field, #6 Tyler tried riding side by side with the #45 Curtis. At this time #91 Kyle had come around and was trying to lap the #20 Mark but was having quite a hard time doing it.

Caution came out as #61 Justin Martin and #3 Matt Wells spun between corners 1 and 2 causing a huge reaction behind them. #44 Barry Dunn who had been coming down the track quite fast (guess he didn't see the caution yet) came into corner 1 and spun hitting the tires sending him up into the air just above the tires, and bouncing down onto the track hitting #36 Casey Cox doing quite a bit of damage to the #36's wing and header. #44 Barry kept on going and never stopped.

Racing resumed with #91 Kyle 1st, #45 Curtis 2nd, #6 Tyler 3rd. Wasn't long before another caution came out as #20 Mark broke on the front stretch. #37 Dean left the track still having engine problems, #36 Casey left and #62 Steve left as well. There were now 20 cars left on the track from the original 27 and most of these were lapped. As the race continued, #90 Mark left, #69 Andy Wells, #32 Dan, #0 D Lewis all left the track. There was such a long green flag that when a caution finally did come out, there were at least 6 cars waiting to come back on to the track.

A caution came out for #1 Holly Porter who spun with #6 Tyler in corner 2. #1 Holly went to the back on this one. Racing continued with #91 Kyle still in the lead but two laps later another caution came out for #8 Ken who spun in corner 1 when his car broke and he had to be pulled off. #44 Barry also left at this point.

With so many cars leaving and coming back on for this 100 lapper as well, I'm sure the score keeper Wayne was glad the season was almost to an end. The checkered flag did drop soon afterwards with #91 Kyle Watters crossing the line 1st. Congratulations Kyle, great ending to your season as well.

At this point I would like to thank Wayne Stainton for his assistance in updating the website and for such a "professional job" of score keeping. Great Job Wayne! To all the other volunteers of the track, great working with you all and thank you for your continued support at the races each week. To Terry Smibert, THANK YOU for those great burgers, saved me from making supper every Friday night (grin). To Hugh Smibert, thank you for your great hospitality. Without you and your family, Friday nights would be less interesting. To all the fans and racers, it's been a blast. Hope you enjoyed your race season and the recaps.

Have a safe and happy winter and hope to see you all again next spring.

Joy Durand

Wonderland Speedway September 9, 2005 - Driver's meeting:

Mainly a reminder that the gates will open at 2:00 next Saturday and Time Trials should begin around 5:00 pm. Racing will begin at 7:30 pm. A reminder to race smart and have fun, DO NOT TAKE OUT your fellow driver.

GUEST DRIVERS: We had three guest drivers tonight. The Outlaw #36 of Casey Cox was driven by Jamie Cox, the Micro #76 of Sean Durand was driven by Dean Parker and the Outlaw #62 of Steve Burlotte was driven by Bob Marr. The Micros had 24 cars and the Outlaws had a field of 28. Only 24 of the 28 Outlaws would be racing in the A Main.

The first A Main tonight was for the MICROS who had a starting field of 23 cars. Sitting on inside pole was the #17 Craig Housden with #203 of Nathan Lloyd at his side on outside pole. With the wave of the green flag, #203 Nathan got the jump on #17 Craig and quickly took the lead. #72 Bob Kelly left the track shortly after the race began.

The race continued with quite a few quick and dirty laps (dust not drivers) with #203 Nathan and #25 Brook Chinnery running side by side briefly before #25 Brook took over the lead. This put #203 Nathan in 2nd and #29 Shane Butler in 3rd and the #79 Chad Baker in 4th.

The first caution came out in corner 3 as #11 Jason Martin who was trying to pass #21 Ron Prince ended up driving right into the #21 Ron who then spun catching up #67 Bill Durand who ended up having his tire ripped off the car as his spindle was broken in the crash. He was then hit by the #58 Chris Kolpin who knocked the #67 Bill onto his side damaging his wing. Both the #67 Bill and #58 Chris were removed from the track and their race was finished for the night. #13 Ian Hunter also left the track on this caution but came back on. #11 Jason was able to continue racing but he did go to the back for causing this accident.

On the restart, #25 Brook still held the lead with #203 Nathan right behind him. There were another few quick laps before the 2nd caution of the race came out for #15 Michael Hanna who spun out in corner 2. He went to the back for his troubles.

Two laps later, the #79 Chad Baker broke on the front stretch, but was able to limp off without causing a caution. Meanwhile, #25 Brook seemed to be on fire (figuratively speaking) as he passed car after car. He took the checkered flag with ease with #203 Nathan close behind him. This was a really fast race and with only two cautions and was over very quickly.

Next up was the OUTLAW A MAIN. Sitting on pole was #20 Mark Watson who was getting in his 2nd of 3 races so that he could race the 100 Lapper this coming weekend. Sitting on outside pole was #12 Johann Schmidt. It was a green/yellow start as on the first lap in the first corner #37 Shawn Paul's had a bit of bad luck as a piece of his car that hold on his axle broke off bringing him to a quick stop. His race was over for the night and he was towed off the track.

This caution made for a complete restart. On the restart, going into the 2nd corner, cars were already running 3 abreast. #20 Mark took the lead with #44 Barry Dunn right behind him putting #12 Johann in 3rd place. The 2nd caution came out as the #3 Matt Wells spun in corner 4 as he had a run in with the #36 Jamie Cox. #36 Jamie went to the rear for this one.

Mark #20 continued to hold the lead with #44 Barry breathing down his neck the whole time. At one point all 23 cars were strung out nose to tail for several laps. Then with #44 Barry seemed to find a little bit more power and managed to run side by side with the #20 Mark trying hard to pass him to take over the lead. Wasn't long before #20 Mark and #44 Barry were putting some distance between them and the 3rd place car of #12 Johann who was being tailed by the #97 Ken Charboneau and #91 Kyle Watters. This group of three was trying to break off from the field as well.

The 2nd caution came in corner 4 as #46 Jake Miller broke and had to be pushed off. Before the race could be restarted, the #32 Dan Laemers pulled up beside the official in corner 4 to let him know that he had just be hit under caution. Apparently, the #6 Tyler Wilson hit the left rear wheel of the #32 Dan, snapping his axle in half. #32 Dan then had to be very slowly pushed off the track.

The racing continued with #20 Mark still in the lead closely shadowed by the #44 Barry. Before two many laps were completed, #4 Steve Wells broke in corner 4 as well. He had a lose screw on a rear shock which made his car feel like he had a flat so he left the track with causing a caution. #90 Mark Lamont also left at this time.

#20 Mark continued to lead with #44 Barry in 2nd, #97 Ken 3rd and #91 Kyle in 4th. #6 Tyler hit the front left tire hard of the #61 Justin Martin as he made a pass on the bottom. Not quite giving #61 Justin a lot of room. Great driving #61 Justin! He held on to the car and only swerved slightly as he kept on racing.

Corner 4 took another victim as the #02 Hugh Smibert broke down there and he was pulled off. Not sure what the situation was with #4 Hugh but there were not enough laps left in the race for him to make it back on the track.

As the race was almost over, #3 Matt and #62 Steve Burlotte were running side by side for a few laps trying hard to move up before the final lap. The race was won by #20 Mark Watson with #44 Barry Dunn in 2nd and #97 Ken Charboneau in 3rd.

All observations and opinions are my own made from my vantage point in the pits. They are not necessarily the opinion of the track owner or officials. J. Durand

Wonderland Speedway August 26, 2005 – Driver’s meeting – This was a meeting to be taken very seriously. There has been a great deal of carnage this past season and even a few physical injuries. Therefore, the track owner Hugh Smibert and track officials have decided that “ANYONE WHO IS DRIVING AGGRESSIVELY” and causes damage to another car either through deliberate intent or carelessness will be given a suspension. They have found that suspension works. The officials are even considering cutting down and going to only 16 cars in the features if they have to. It was STRESSED repeatedly, this is for fun only. If you are given a spot after a caution TAKE IT. End of discussion. Bottom line, (as per track owner and officials) LISTEN UP – PAY ATTENTION – HAVE FUN!

Now on to the race recap. This evening’s racing began with the first of twin 30 lap races for the Outlaws. The OUTLAW A MAIN’s first race started with 25 cars. Darin Hanna of the #24 sat on inside pole and #37 Shawn Paul held outside pole. At the drop of the green flag, the cars took off to a roaring start with #24 Darin in the lead only to be shut down again before the second lap was completed by a caution where #4 Steve Wells and #44 Barry Dunn came together on the infield. Result - #4 Steve and #44 Barry went to the back along with the #24 Darin who had left the track briefly, leaving #37 Shawn as the leader.

On the restart, #37 Shawn was 1st, #62 Steve Burlotte 2nd, and #91 Kyle Watters 3rd. Once again, it was a quick lap and then caution as between corner 3 and 4 there was a multiple pile up when  #62 Steve Burlotte who had been sitting in 2nd made it past the #37 Shawn and was spun by the #37 Shawn which resulted in nine cars all coming to an abrupt halt. Result - #62 Steve got his spot back and the #37 Shawn went to the back. He left the track briefly but then returned.

Next restart had the #62 Steve still in 1st, #91 Kyle in 2nd and #31 Adrian Kemps sitting in 3rd. Back in the field #6 Tyler Wilson, #32 Dan Laemers were working hard to move up to the front. #62 Steve held the lead with #91 Kyle right behind him as they began putting distance between them and the rest of the field. Cars were quickly lapped, the #37 Shawn, #11 Norm Brunette and the #24 Darin. Next caution was called as #24 Darin got out of control in corner 4 narrowly missing the corner man, Ron Bishop. #24 Darin was sent to the back. Meanwhile, #37 Shawn left the track once again but made it back on before the green flag was dropped.

Racing restarted with #62 Steve sitting firm in 1st, #91 Kyle safe in 2nd, #301 Ron Veroughstrate now in 3rd , #6 Tyler 4th and #32 Dan 5th. At the tail end of the field, #37 Shawn, #11 Norm and #24 Darin were running 2 and 3 a breast. At one point, #24 Darin and the #0 D Lewis were running side by side with #91 Kyle and #62 Steve running side by side RIGHT BEHIND THEM. This little group of four made a couple of laps until a caution came out for the #69 Andy Wells who spun on the front stretch and who then took his place up in the back.

Top five cars held their positions for several laps and the rest of the field strung out nose to tail taking up ¾‘s of the track as the racing continued until the next caution.  #44 Barry was spun in corner 2 by the #12 Johann Schmidt who was then sent to the back.

Kevin Moore #64 broke and left the track bringing out a caution as he limped off. #45 Curtis Gartly also broke and was pushed off during the same caution. Unfortunately for the #64 Kevin, even with his quick fix, he could not quite make it back on the track before the green flag and was left sitting at the #2 entrance.

With only a few laps to go, racing continued. #301 Ron had a  bit of back luck as he was bumped by the #6 Tyler and lost his chain, #301 Ron rode high out of the traffic and made it off without assistance with only 3 laps to go.

Steve Burlotte #62 took the checkered flag, with #91 Kyle 2nd, #6 Tyler 3rd. This race ended at 9:10 pm.

MICRO A MAIN began at 9:15 pm. Chad Baker #79 had inside pole and #203 Nathan Lloyd sat on outside pole. Race began with #79 Chad getting the lead but was shut down as a huge crash occurred on corner 2 on the 2nd lap. Cars involved were #72 Bob Kelly, #67 Bill Durand, #15 Michael Hanna, #19 Trevor Helle, #16 Rick Bigg, #58 Chris Kolpin, #27 Nathan Housden, #40 Shawn Preston, and #25 Brook Chinnery. #27 Nathan ended up on top of #72 Bob and our four wheeler angel had to use a great deal of force to untangle these two. Cars that left the track from this debacle were #40 Shawn, #85 Sadie Bennett (not directly involved), #15 Michael, #73 Bob, #19 Trevor, #27 Nathan and the #15 Michael. This happened so quickly that neither I nor my colleague in the stands was able to determine the original cause of the accident.

Racing resumed with #79 Chad 1st, #203 Nathan 2nd, #76 Sean Durand 3rd, #31 Brent Kemps 4th and #17 Craig Housden 5th. Bob #72 and #19 Trevor tried to make it back on before the start but didn’t quite make it and sat at the entrance in corner 2. They didn’t have to wait long as the next caution came out for #79 Chad who spun in corner 4. After, I would assume, some quick discussion, the officials DID NOT send anyone to the back as they could not establish who was the actual culprit here and decided to give the top few cars a break. (Almost unheard of but happens occasionally I am told).

Racing continued with #79 Chad 1st, #203 Nathan 2nd, #76 Sean 3rd, #55 Jordan Hanna now sat in 4th and #31 Brent was back in 5th. Once again, cars were running side by side in groups of four. These were #79 Chad, #203 Nathan with #76 Sean and #55 Jordan right behind them. You have to have a lot of confidence in the drivers around you to run this close and there is no room for error.

Caution #3 occurred in corner 3 when #11 Jason Martin, #67 Bill, #72 Bob and #58 Chris came together. #72 Bob went to the back for this caution.

With the resumption of the race, there was a slight change in the top five cars as #79 Chad still held 1st, #203 Nathan still held 2nd, but #55 Jordan now held 3rd putting #76 Sean into 4th and #31 Brent still sitting in 5th. The restart went Green/Yellow as a caution came out for the #11 Jason who spun again in corner 4. He left the track.

AS the racing continued there was another slight change in the top five cars just past half way, with #79 Chad 1st, #55 Jordan in 2nd, #76 Sean moved up to 3rd, Nathan #203 fell back to 4th and #13 Ian Hunter now moved up to 5th.  The next caution came out as #15 Michael rode high to the wall and spun out by him self, down across the track right in front of the leaders. His car did not appear to be handling well since the first caution. He was then BLACK FLAGGED and left the track.

This was a VERY fast race with cars racing very tightly together. At one point, the leader #79 Chad and #55 Jordan were running side by side at the front of the field. #13 Ian who did not seem to be running well, slowed right down and stayed low on the track in the main groove quickly becoming a slow moving pylon for the cars to go around. He finally made his way off the track after a few laps. Shortly afterwards a caution came out for #25 Brook who spun in corner 2 and was sent to the rear of the field.

With only 7 laps to go #55 Jordan took over the lead from #79 Chad, and began to quickly put distance between him and the #79 Chad who was trying to put distance between him and the #76 Sean. The race ended with #55 Jordan Hanna taking the checkered flag, #79 Chad Baker 2nd and 76 Sean Durand in 3rd. #13 Ian had tried to come back on to the track but the race ended without another caution which would have been his opening. Race finished at 9:35 pm.

The second OUTLAW A MAIN began pretty much like the first one with a quick caution just after the green flag. #12 Johann Schmidt held inside pole with #97 Ken Charboneau on outside pole. With the start of the race, #12 Johann took the  lead but his lead was cut short as a massive crash occurred. Steve Burlotte #62 and #44 Barry Dunn came together causing #44 Barry to get airborne and go off the track. This possibly happened as there were quite a few slower cars in the front of the field for the start of the race causing the faster cars in the middle and back to get boxed up and tangled together. Barry #44 came back on to the track, #301 Ron Veroughstrate also left the track and came back on.

Racing continued, fast and furious with a tremendous amount of dust flying as the cars made their way around the track lap after lap. #24 Darin Hanna left the track with out causing a caution.

Half way through the race the top five cars were #69 Andy Wells 1st, #12 Johann 2nd, #4 Steve Wells 3rd, #46 Jake Miller 4th and #02 Hugh Smibert 5th.  The next caution came out as #90 Mark Lamont bounced up on to the infield and had to be pushed off the track, #8 Ken Lewis went to the back for this incident. #301 Ron left the track once again but made it back on before racing resumed.

The top five cars remained the same through out the race with quite a bit of bumping and passing going on in the rest of the field. This continued to be a very fast race. On one lap, #91 Kyle Watters, passed under the #32 Dan Laemers as #31 Adrian Kemps passed on the high side of #32 Dan. Three wide is still not a really good idea for this track, but I guess some drivers haven’t quite figured that out yet. In any case #91 Kyle came out of this sandwich first and went a head of #32 Dan, but it didn’t work out so well for the #31 Adrian, as he ended up behind the #32 Dan.

The last caution of the night came out as #11 Norm Brunette broke down on the back stretch and had to be pushed off the track. When the race was restarted, #69 Andy who was running in 1st quickly began putting distance between him and the 2nd place car of #12 Johann who was busy putting distance between him and 3rd place car #4 Steve. #46 Jake who was in 4th was busy breathing down #4 Steve’s neck as he also tried to ward off the 5th place car of #2 Hugh Smibert. All in all, these drivers were working it hard to finish this race in the top 5 positions and this order was how they crossed under the checkered flag. Congratulations go out to #69 Andy Wells who won and to #4 Steve Wells, his dad who finished 3rd. The Wells Foundry team had a great race tonight.
